Katy Perry came to the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn ready to roar in her leopard-print Emanuel Ungaro dress and sky-high ponytail. Celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin can be credited for the “wild” hair look, which she told us was inspired by Perry’s outfit and similar looks in foreign fashion magazines. “We were going for a fashion moment,” she told InStyle exclusively. “I also wanted to show off Katy’s face, and expose the high collar on the dress.” Atkin gave the look a strong foundation by washing Perry’s hair with a frizz-taming shampoo and conditioner, and followed up with a dime-sized amount of hair oil.
